A THAI MAN celebrating the New Year by drinking with friends outdoors in a Samut Prakan alley was suddenly hit in the knee by a falling bullet and had to be rushed to the hospital, Thai Rath newspaper said today (Jan. 1)
Just five minutes past midnight Pol. Lt. Witthaya Namthong, deputy inspector at Phra Pradaeng police station, was informed of Mr. Nanthawut Sunthornwat, 45, being hit by a bullet in the knee and quickly went with a police team to inspect the scene of the incident in Bang Yo subdistrict, Phra Pradaeng district.
At the end of an alley in this subdistrict they found a table set up for a New Year party.
Mr. Jirawet Mukthong, 35, who was among six to seven friends celebrating New Year by eating and drinking from 6 p.m. yesterday said at 11.45 p.m. his friend suddenly yelled that he had been shot and for the others to take cover in the house.
Soon afterwards neighbours called rescuers for help and he was quickly taken to Bangpakok 3 Hospital.
However none of the revellers nor the neighbours heard gunfire in the vicinity and the bullet is believed to have come from elsewhere.
Police are waiting for the doctor to remove the bullet from the injured man to find out what type it is and are questioning people in this area to find out if anyone saw a gun being fired at around midnight.
