PHUKET police raided a foreign engineer’s house on the island where they found a small arsenal of weapons including AK and M16 rifles, explosives and ammunition of various sizes, TV Channel 7 said today (Nov. 7).
Led by Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew and Pol. Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit, head of Provincial Police Region 8, the police team raided the unidentified foreigner’s house in Kathu district.
The team confiscated seven long guns, with two of them being war weapons – AK and M16 rifles, 19 shotguns, 11 explosives and a large amount of ammunition of various sizes.
The foreign suspect is a professional engineer and has lived in Thailand for over 20 years. He has a work permit and was married to a Thai woman who has passed away.
He was taken to Kathu police station and charged with having guns, explosives and ammunition in his possession without permission.
The suspect initially claimed that the seized firearms were his collection but police were sceptical because there were too many for this purpose.
Police also pointed to the house having been modified to produce firearms and that they had received information that he was involved in the firearms industry.
Moreover being an engineer he has the knowledge on how to assemble a weapon with a soundproofed tank and other sound-reducing material found in his house indicating that weapons were tested there, police added.
