Suspect held in theft of Greek family’s cash, 500 euros recovered

 

PHUKET police have arrested a suspect in the theft of a Greek family’s cash and recovered 500 out of 4,900 euros he had taken from their rented car on Jan. 26, Matichon newspaper said.

Mr.Alexandros Alexiadis had filed a complaint at Karon police station that this sum of money was stolen from his family’s vehicle parked at Kata Ocean View Condominium Phase 3’s parking lot with the crime having occurred from 8.30 p.m. Jan. 25 to 2.30 p.m. the next day.

Police yesterday arrested Mr. Kanaphong (surname withheld), 24, from Udon Thani province under a warrant issued by Phuket Provincial Court.

Seized from him were 500 euros of the stolen money, a motorcycle he used in the crime, a black hoodie, a pair of black pants and black sneakers he wore that day.

The suspect confessed that on the day of the theft he rode through the parking lot then walked around prying open vehicles to find valuables. He then noticed that the dome lights within the victim’s car were left on so went to have a look. Upon finding the car unlocked he took the cash and fled.

He added that he had spent the stolen money with 500 euros being left.

He has been charged with stealing at night and using a vehicle to take the stolen cash or to escape arrest or accepting stolen assets.

The suspect has a criminal record of several burglaries including one in Wichit sub-district in 2020 and two in Chalong sub-district in 2021.
