Daily Covid count surges to 15,335 amid scare over homeless people in Korat

AS the daily Covid tally continues to rise reaching 15,335 new cases and 129 deaths this morning (July 25), Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) city residents appealed for help as 30 new homeless people were found sleeping on the streets with many of them sick and possibly infected with coronavirus, Sanook.com said.

Of the large batch of new cases, 14,694 were among the general public while 641 fell sick in prisons and detention centres.

The cumulative confirmed total since the start of the pandemic has reached 497,302 and in the current wave that began in April 468,439.

The 129 new fatalities raised the death toll to 4,059 while another 6,904 people have been cured taking total recoveries to 158,550.

Meanwhile the “Santa Claus on the Street” volunteer group said in a Facebook post today that a survey they conducted from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. last night in Nakhon Ratchasima city and Nong Phai Lom district found 44 homeless people sleeping on the streets with 30 of them being new ones.

Most of the new homeless people had drifted to this northeastern city from other districts and provinces and were previously employed as general workers, guards and at construction sites. Many want to go to their provincial home but buses are not running leaving them stranded here.

“Even though ours is a small group, we have been working with homeless people for 10 years now. We try to do as much as we can as part of our civic duty. Another aspect of our work is to forward information to relevant government agencies so that they could provide assistance to these people as appropriate,” the post said.

When this post went viral, residents of this city expressed a lot of concern because most of the homeless people had lost their job and had no money. Some of them could have travelled from high-risk zones, particularly Bangkok, and most of them had fever, cough and cold thus could spread coronavirus in the city.

They urged the authorities to help these homeless people as soon as possible because of the risk of the coronavirus outbreak worsening.
