Bangkok hits new record for Covid cases, no infection in 17 provinces

THE Public Health Ministry said at 1 p.m. today (May 17) that of the daily Covid tally of 9,635 cases, with 6,853 being  inmates and 2,782 the general public, 1,843 were in Bangkok which is the capital’s new high in the current wave, Siam Rath newspaper said.

However while coronavirus cases could still be found in 60 provinces, 17 had no infection with these being Lamphun, Chaiyaphum, Buriram, Nakhon Phanom, Nan, Sukhothai, Chumphon, Phrae, Uttaradit, Chainat, Nong Khai, Phang Nga, Amnat Charoen, Mukdahan, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Bueng Kan and Satun.

The top 10 provinces with the highest number of coronavirus cases from April 1, 2021 till today, May 17, 2021 are as follows:

  1. Bangkok:  1,843 new cases, totaling 27,785 (a new record high with the previous peak being on April 24, 2021 at 1,582 cases)
  2. Nonthaburi: 129 new cases, totaling 4,602;
  3. Samut Prakan: 155 new cases, totaling 4,208;
  4. Chiang Mai: 8 new cases, totaling 3,987;
  5. Chonburi: 45 new cases, totaling 3,735;
  6. Pathum Thani: 146 new cases, totaling 2,350;
  7. Samut Sakhon: 43 new cases, totaling 1,867;
  8. Prachuap Khiri Khan: 4 new cases, totaling 1,514;
  9. Surat Thani: 27 new cases, totaling 1,441;
  10. Songkhla: 42 new cases, totaling 1,012.

Meanwhile Dr. Taweesilp Visanuyothin, a spokesman of Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), said the infection at various prisons in the current coronavirus wave today totaled 10,748 out of 24,357 inmates tested, or 49%, with results of 2,235 awaited.

A breakdown of the prison infection is as follows:

– Bangkok prisons: Bangkok Remand Prison, Central Women’s Correctional Institution, Thonburi Remand Prison, Klong Prem Central Prison, Central Special Treatment Centre –  6,749 inmates infected out of 14,429 tested, or 47%;

– Nonthaburi Province Prison: 48 inmates infected out of 2,661 tested, with results of 2,214 awaited, or 11%;

– Chachoengsao Provincial Central Prison: 22 inmates infected out of a total of 798, with results of 21 awaited, or 3%;

– Chiang Mai Central Prison: 3,929 inmates infected out of 6,469 tested, or 61%.
