A POLICE OFFICER shot dead his wife, a teacher at a kindergarten in Chonburi, today (Sep. 9) and fortunately all 44 young students are safe with parents rushing to take them home while authorities are negotiating with the perpetrator to surrender, TV Channel 7 and Amarin TV said.
At approximately 11.30 a.m. police at Bang Lamung station were alerted of a fatal shooting at Nong Pla Lai subdistrict municipality kindergarten. A police team quickly rushed there together with rescuers from Sawang Boriboon Dhammasathan Foundation and other relevant agencies. Chonburi Governor Naris Niramaiwong also arrived to monitor the situation.
Many students were found in a state of shock with police and rescuers moving them to a safe area in front of the kindergarten and urgently contacted parents to pick them up. Preliminary checks confirmed that all 44 students were safe and unharmed with Chonburi governor immediately ordering kindergarten’s closure.
On the ground floor, inside the cafeteria, officials discovered the body of the deceased woman identified as Mrs. Pailin, 48. She was wearing a blue-sleeved top and blue sweatpants and was found lying face-up at the scene with a gunshot wound near her left temple. A 9mm shell casing was found nearby and collected as evidence.
The perpetrator, a police officer and the victim’s husband, identified as Pol. Sub. Lt. Thatsapong Thongthatch, walked back to his white sedan and drove away after the shooting.
Police tracked him to his residence and are currently negotiating for his surrender.
The cause and motive behind the incident remain under investigation, alongside the gathering of evidence and the questioning of witnesses to proceed with legal action.
Mr. Somyot Sa-nguanworapong, 57, an eyewitness, reported that prior to the incident, he saw a man park a sedan, approach the deceased, and engage in conversation. Subsequently, a gunshot was heard. The event unfolded so rapidly that bystanders were shocked and scrambled for cover before the man returned to his white sedan and drove away from the scene.
