THAI Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul invited Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to visit the country during a meeting with visiting Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe this afternoon (July 14), Amarin TV said this evening.
Ms. Rachada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, said Anutin reiterated to the Myanmar minister during his courtesy call that Thailand is ready to be a bridge connecting Myanmar with Asean as this would open up space for constructive discussions and cooperation
Thailand believes that a more stable Myanmar, capable of working more effectively with Asean member states, will facilitate the resolution of cross-border issues affecting the Thai people and strengthen peace and security in the region as a whole.
The two of them focused on strengthening Thai-Myanmar relations and promoting cooperation on issues directly affecting security, economy, and quality of life of the people of both countries.
Anutin mentioned that Thailand and Myanmar are neighbouring countries sharing a border and are members of the Asean family. Major problems affecting the Thai people, such as drug trafficking, transnational crime, transboundary haze, or the impact of border situation, cannot be solved by one country as it requires genuine cooperation by both sides.
Min Aung Hlaing visited India from May 30 to June 3, with this being his first foreign trip since taking over the presidency in April, and also visited Laos during July 3-5, his first visit to an Asean member state since taking office.
In February 2021, Min Aung Hlaing, then the armed forces commander-in-chief, seized power by ousting the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, shortly after her National League for Democracy won a landslide election victory, according to BBC.
The military takeover sparked nationwide protests that later evolved into an armed resistance movement and a civil war that has killed thousands of people, displaced millions and left large parts of the country outside military control.
Consequences of the conflict also spilled across the border into India, with thousands of people, many from Myanmar’s Chin ethnic minority, taking refuge in India’s northeastern states of Mizoram and Manipur.
Myanmar held elections between December 2025 and January 2026. The military-backed side secured an overwhelming victory in the polls in which many opposition parties were barred from contesting and large conflicted areas were unable to participate. In a parliament dominated by military loyalists, Min Aung Hlaing was elected president in April.
