Foreigner dies after being hit by train in Chonburi

A FOREIGN man was hit and killed by an express train passing through Chonburi this afternoon (May 30) with the driver saying he blared the horn to warn him but was not able to stop in time while the passengers were shocked by this accident, Amarin TV said this evening (May 30).

At 5 p.m.  Pol. Lt. Rachapol Seniwong Na Ayutthaya, deputy inspector for investigation at Bang Lamung police station, was alerted of the train accident in this district and quickly went there with a police team and rescuers to investigate.

Upon arrival they found that the Bangkok-Chuksamed Express passenger train had stopped while many people were standing around watching what had happened. Human remains were scattered across over 200 metres of the track and rescuers thoroughly searched for body parts and put them together, but they failed to find the lower left leg and wrist.

Preliminary examination of the body parts suggests the deceased was a foreigner, approximately 30-40 years old, wearing a blue shirt of a famous English football club, black shorts, and white sneakers. Additionally, about 200 metres from the train, under a bush, a plastic bag containing a mat and a plastic water bottle were found. These are believed to belong to the deceased and were collected as evidence.

Mr. Peerapol Lamnoi, the train driver, said he was taking passengers to Bangkok Railway Station when a foreigner emerged from the side of the track and stood in front of the train, with their back to him, at close range. He tried warning him by blaring the horn, but the foreigner did not move. Because this is an express train, he was unable to brake in time and struck him. He then stopped the train to check on the deceased after which State Railway of Thailand officials and the police arrived to investigate.

A reporter spoke with Ms. A (pseudonym), 37, who lives in this area, and she said that she heard a loud train whistle and suspected something bad had happened so hopped on her motorcycle and rode to the track and found the train had stopped. She later learned that a foreign national had been struck and killed by this train.

She added that at around 3.57 p.m. she had seen the foreigner walk past her shop, looking down and not speaking to anyone. She and her friends even jokingly commented on how good-looking he was. A surveillance clip confirmed it was the same man who was horrifically struck and killed by the train.

Pol.Lt. Rachapol said his team could not yet identify the deceased with the body being sent for autopsy and identification at the Forensic Science Institute, Police Hospital.

The cause of death is suspected to be suicide, but investigation will continue to ascertain what actually took place.
