Residents panic after seeing several ‘drones’ near Suvarnabhumi airport

SECURITY agencies held a meeting today (Dec. 21) after several residents said they saw a large fleet of mysterious drones flying near Sunvarnabhumi airport but the authorities have yet to confirm they were Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Amarin TV said.

Reporters of this television station talked to some residents of Nong Prue subdistrict, Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan province, who showed them photos and videos of the swarm of drones they took.

Ms. Ple (pseudonym) said she used her mobile phone to film the large number of drones flying in this area. It was 7.30 p.m. when she first saw them but when her sibling asked her whether she had seen them they went out and saw them flying near a shop so quickly filmed the sighting.

When she zoomed in with her camera she was surprised to see that there were many of them with this being unusual for this area and she did not know why they were there.

“Even at around 11 p.m. to midnight, we still saw them flying around. I have no idea where they’re coming from. I admit I’m scared because there are so many of them. We don’t know what they’re doing or who they belong to. From what I could see by zooming in, they’re very large, they’re not small drones, and they’re definitely not airplane lights,” she said.

Other residents confirmed that what they saw were drones and that they had observed them flying in Bang Na-Trat road area then moving towards Nong Prue subdistrict.

They confirmed that there were many of them and they had never seen anything like this before. Asked if they were scared, they admitted being more concerned about their safety.

Meanwhile, security agencies, including the police, local administration and Suvarnabhumi Airport officials have held an emergency meeting to plan the handling of drone sightings in the area.

They are also investigating images and video clips residents took of these flying objects but cannot yet confirm they were drones.

However, as a precaution, they have increased surveillance measures and deployed anti-drone equipment in the area, with security personnel ordered to step up patrols. Community leaders have been contacted to inform residents to be vigilant and immediately report any suspicious individuals or drone sightings to the local police.
