The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Special Envoy for Asian Affairs will again make a shuttle-diplomacy trip to Cambodia and Thailand today in an effort to bridge the two sides to rebuild peace at an early date, Xinhua news agency quoted a foreign ministry spokesperson as saying late yesterday.
As a close neighbour and friend of Cambodia and Thailand, China closely follows the ongoing border conflict between the two countries and has shuttled between the two sides to promote peace, the spokesperson said.
“Through its own way, China has been working actively for deescalation,” the spokesperson added.
Questioned by reporters before attending a Cabinet meeting as to whether the Chinese Special Envoy’s visit to Thailand was intended to put pressure for an end to the fighting, Anutin did not answer, only smiled and laughed.
Asked again whether the Chinese government would hold talks with both countries to end the clashes, Anutin replied, “Let me attend the meeting first.”
Meanwhile at around noon today the Army Military Force Facebook page said the Thai military launched an air attack on a Cambodian military base in Zone 5 of Poipet border town, just across from Aranyaprathet, after discovering that Cambodian soldiers had gathered there with their weapons for potential attack onThailand, TV Channel 7 said.
The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided, this TV Channel said.
Cambodian media too reported that “Thai Air Force F-16 fighter jets conducted an air strike in Poipet area.”
