Khmers launch heavy attack while accusing Thais of firing toxic smoke

 

FIGHTING is continuing along Thai-Cambodian border today [Dec. 9] with the Second Army Region saying at 9 a.m. that Khmers had launched a heavy attack on the Thai side using artillery, BM-21 rockets and suicide drones plus Phnom Penh also accused Thai soldiers of firing toxic smoke at a military base in an early morning Facebook post, Naewna newspaper and Amarin TV said.

Army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari said clashes with small arms and support weapons used by both sides are continuing but no casualties or injuries have been reported.

After the seizure of Prasat Khana site in Surin province, no retaliation was reported, but mine clearance is needed to impose complete control.

Meanwhile the First Army Region said at 6 a.m. this morning Thai units began an operation to retake  Ban Nong Chan in Sa Kaeo province which the Khmers have occupied and the mission is underway. Ban Nong Ya Kaew is now fully under Thai control. Both were formerly refugee camps housing Cambodians.

At approximately 1.50 a.m., Cambodian mortar and artillery shells were found in ​​Ban Khok Thahan area with two civilian homes damaged as follows:

1/ The house of Mr. Sophi Kankhem in Thap Sadet subdistrict suffered complete damage.

2/ The house of Mr. Wicha Chamdam, in the same subdistrict, suffered minor shrapnel damage. No injuries or deaths were reported as the families had already been evacuated.

The Thai military was accused of harassing throughout the night, from 4.58 a.m. to 5.25 a.m., the Thai armed forces deployed a large number of drones to Tro Ngori mountain and also fired toxic smoke into the area. From 5.30 a.m. to 6.10 a.m., the Thai military began firing 105mm rounds at the Chang Ophlok base. The Thai military is continuing shelling, the Cambodian Defence Ministry said.

While accusing the Thai side of violating the peace agreement signed on October 26, 2025, as witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Cambodia also called on Thailand to cease fire.

Surin residents were terrified by the sound of BM-21 rocket fire at 4.45 a.m. which was clearly heard in the city district.

Mr. Suphot Laodee, 58, a villager who woke up at 3 a.m. and lit a fire outside his house to keep warm, said at around 4 a.m. he heard what sounded like several BM-21 rockets coming from the border with the sound reaching Surin City. His house is about 100km from the border, and the sound could still be heard from there.

Supoj added that in 2011, he had also heard similar sounds, but it wasn’t during winter. He wasn’t worried about any harm coming to Surin City because he was confident that the Thai military would be able to protect and accurately intercept Cambodian rockets.
