Two shots fired at jet-skiing rescuers in Hat Yai

SEVERE flooding in southern Hat Yai city is turning violent as two shots were fired at jet-skiing rescuers with a flat-bottom boat accompanying them also smashed on the bow forcing a quick withdrawal, Amarin TV said this evening (Nov. 26)

The Army Military Force Facebook page posted this message, “Urgent! A jetski rescue team at District 8 ran into hot-headed residents who fired two shots and smashed a flat-bottom boat on the bow. The entire rescue team has withdrawn from District 8. It’s not safe!”

“Yesterday, three shots were fired, and now two more at the rescue team. I’m starting to suspect it’s not a local. They’re trying to create conflict on the ground between the public, the military, and rescue workers. This is surely BRN ( Barisan Revolusi Nasional Malayu Patani),” the following message said.

Yesterday’s jetski team withdrew after three shots were fired in front of Ban Koh Mi School in Hat Yai district. The Koh Mi community surrounding the school was flooded almost to the second floor with over a hundred people trapped within waiting to be evacuated.

Throughout the day, many residents had been standing in front of the school, monitoring the water level, worried about their relatives still inside.

They tried to find food and drinking water but were unable to walk through the swirling floodwaters. Finally two young men decided to swim through the floods to get some provisions but were nearly swept away and finally had to cling to a tree to survive.
