Heavy traffic snarl-ups after torrential rain lashes Bangkok

HEAVY all night rain that turned into a torrential downpour accompanied with strong winds this morning (Oct. 3) led to numerous trees being toppled across Bangkok and roofs blown away triggering bad traffic congestion on several roads, Amarin TV said.

Many areas are also flooded with uprooted trees and roofs that were peeled off by strong gusts blocking some roads causing severe traffic congestion and power outages in parts of the metropolis.

Damage from this heavy storm and strong winds is widespread, particularly in key areas of Bangkok as follows:

–  Ramkhamhaeng Soi 60, subsoi 10, Hua Mak subdistrict, Bang Kapi district, experienced severe damage, with roofs blown away and a knocked-down tree damaging a vehicle;

– In Vibhavadi Soi 19, Chatuchak district, a large tree fell in the middle of the road, blocking traffic and crushing passing vehicles;

– In Phatthanakan Soi 30, Suan Luang district, a large sheet of metal roofing fell in the middle of the road before a bridge over a canal, preventing traffic from going through and motorists were warned to immediately avoid the area;

– On Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road in front of Nakhonchai Air, coming from Ratchayothin, two large trees fell, blocking traffic and causing extensive traffic congestion;

– On Ratchadaphisek Soi 32 in front of the Piyaphirom Building, a fallen tree completely blocked the road, paralysing traffic in the area;

– In Krungthep Kreetha Soi 8, it was reported that some power poles and transformers had toppled, triggering power outages in the area;

– On Srinakarin Road, outbound, before Srinakarin Soi 9, a steel frame and galvanised sheeting fell on the road, blocking the left lane. Traffic was severely congested, with the end of the line being at Lam Sali intersection;

– On Debaratna Road, inbound, in front of Megabangna shopping complex and Thai Watsadu retail outlet, the parallel lane is flooded. The outbound parallel lane in front of Tesco Lotus retail store is also flooded and congested.

District offices and related agencies are mobilising personnel and equipment to urgently remove fallen trees from roads and homes plus repair electricity poles and transformers to quickly restore service.

Officials urged the public who do not have urgent business to avoid these areas as traffic is already badly congested on several routes.

Those who spot toppled trees and downed power poles or other damage should report them to relevant local authorities  or the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority’s complaint channels so that officials could quickly tackle the problems.
