A SENATOR charged with robbing the corpse of a car accident victim in 2021 and using his senatorial status to delay legal proceedings in court will likely be investigated for violating code of ethics by the upper chamber, Amarin TV said this evening (Aug. 11).
Bang Pakong police station in Chachoengsao province had filed charges with the Attorney General and the Criminal Court against the unnamed prominent senator for taking valuables from the body of a victim who died when his car overturned on the Bang Na Expressway, a kilometre away from Bang Wua subdistrict, at 11,50 p.m. on May 31, 2021. This was captured by a surveillance camera.
When rescuers got to the scene of the accident, there were already good Samaritans helping out. Aside from the person who died, there were others who had got injured and they were quickly taken to the hospital.
The deceased’s family later reported to police that seven items were missing including two mobile phones worth approximately 70,000 baht, a pair of glasses worth 30,000 baht, a Louis Vuitton bag worth 120,000 baht, an eight-baht-weight gold necklace, a gold-framed amulet worth 220,000 baht and 120,000 baht in cash, altogether totalling 2 million baht.
Upon going through the surveillance camera clip police saw that a truck had stopped near the car crash with two men coming out to help the victims, one of them was the prominent senator.
The senator later admitted to stealing from the deceased person and only returned the Louis Vuitton bag and a mobile phone. Police and prosecutors subsequently charged the senator with several legal offenses, and the case is continuing in court.
This senator has been previously prosecuted. In 2011, he was charged with running an illegal lottery in Chonburi, and was fined.
In 2016 he was prosecuted for owning a fishing boat that did not have a tracking system installed as required by the Fisheries Act.
This year a woman filed a complaint against the senator alleging sexual harassment.
The Election Commission said that the senator is being allowed to continue performing his duties because the corpse robbery case has not been concluded while those cases that have been finalised do not conflict with qualifications for senatorship.
