THE 2nd Army Region is willing to build a fence at Prasat Ta Muen Thom border temple if so ordered by the government and the Fine Arts Department but warned doing so could lead to tensions escalating as Cambodia does not accept the 1:50,000 map, Naewna newspaper said today (July 15).
Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang, this region’s commander, said while visiting Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok, Uthenthawai campus, in Bangkok that the border situation remained the same with nothing having changed.
While Thai-Cambodian relations are moving in a positive direction with there being discussions at the local level the policies of the two countries are awaited.
Regarding Cambodian leader Hun Sen threatening that tensions would escalate further if a fence is built around Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple, Lt. Gen. Boonsin said Cambodia does not accept the border demarcation and there is a chance that the situation will deteriorate. For this reason this step must be carefully considered.
“If they confirm that it is to be built, the 2nd Army Region is ready to proceed. We are using the 1:50,000 map so it doesn’t matter where Google location pin of Prasart Ta Muen Thom temple is fixed. It is a technical matter that the government must sort out. These pins can be changed, so it’s not an issue,” he said.
As yet no progress has been made in holding a Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting with Thailand waiting for Cambodian leaders to decide when it is to take place.
Regarding the situation a Phu Makhuea where around 10 people have been living there since 2000, the strategy is to talk to each other because the two countries use different maps, he said, with this differing from Chong Bok, Ubon Ratchathani province, where there was a clash on May 28, 2025 leading to the death of a Cambodian soldier.
As for the performance of Cambodian rituals at border temples, such as the recent one held at Prasat Ta Kwai temple, Surin province, Thailand is allowing them to take place with this being an exception but it must be within appropriate boundaries, he added.
