AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale that struck Chiang Mai at 2.07 p.m. today (June 2) was caused by a movement in Mae Tha Fault Group with many provinces feeling the tremors, TV Channel 7 said.
This fault group runs almost north to south and today it was a normal fault movement.
Tremors from this earthquake, at a one-kilometre depth, were felt in Phrao, Fang, Chiang Dao, Mae Taeng, San Sai, Doi Saket, Saraphi, Mae Wang, Mae Ai and Chiang Mai City districts of Chiang Mai province; Pai district of Mae Hong Son province; Ko Kha district of Lampang province; Lamphun City district of Lamphun province and Dok Khamtai district of Phayao province.
While there were no reports of damage initially, a little later Chiang Mai Governor Nirat Phongsitthaworn ordered all officials to survey the province for damage and see if there were any casualties. They were told to focus on places where people gather, old and tall buildings, temples and ancient sites.
Directors of Mae Ngad Dam, Mae Kuang Dam and Chiang Mai Airport were told to survey the structures while the public was told to follow safety measures.
