Group asks Anwar Ibrahim to end Thaksin’s Asean chair adviser role

THE Student and People Network for Reform of Thailand today (May 14) submitted a letter to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the Malaysian embassy asking him to remove de facto Pheu Thai boss and former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as his adviser in his capacity as chair of Association of Southeast Asian Nation (Asean) this year, Naewna and MNG Online said.

Led by Mr. Pichit Chaiyamongkol the group said they feared Thaksin would use this role to flee the country as he is facing lese majeste charges over verbal statements he earlier made abroad.

In addition, the National Anti-Corruption Commission is looking into Thaksin’s six-month-long medical treatment at Police Hospital instead of Bangkok Remand Prison’s hospital after which he was released on parole. The billionaire power player had been accused of feigning “critical illnesses” to keep himself from being literally put behind bars to otherwise serve a curtailed, one-year jail sentence after he had returned from a 17-year self-exile abroad in 2023.

A representative from the Malaysian embassy came down to receive the letter, which took 15 seconds.
