Friendship Bridge packed as price petrol in Myawaddy soars to 135 baht a litre

THE 2nd Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge linking Myawaddy township to Thai Mae Sot town was packed this evening (Feb. 13) as residents drove across the border to the Thai side to fill their tanks with what fuel still available there now costing 135 baht a litre, Naewna newspaper said.

Since Feb. 5 when the Thai government cut electricity, Internet and fuel supply from five points to three Myanmar townships – Tachileik, Myawaddy and Payathonzu – to suppress transnational criminals running scam hubs along the border there is now almost a hundred percent shortage of fuel in Myawaddy with all petrol pumps closed.

This bridge linking the two border towns was still packed with vehicles at 5.50 p.m. with Myawaddy residents waiting to get some fuel on the Thai side.

Currently the price of a 20-litre jerrycan of petrol in Myawaddy is 2,700 baht or 135 baht a litre.

However officials have instructed petrol pumps in Mae Sot to only fill vehicle tanks and not sell fuel in jerrycans and other types of containers.
