3 Bangkok schools shut as PM2.5 pollution soars

 

THREE schools in Bangkok were ordered closed after the concentration of ultrafine dust particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres, known as PM2.5, soared today (Jan. 20) with Nong Khaem district worst hit, TV Channel 7 said.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said at 9 a.m. this morning PM2.5 reached 125 µg/m³ in Nong Khaem district, 122.5 µg/m³ in Bangkok Yai district, 120 µg/m³ at Thonburi side of the city, 111 µg/m³  in Khlong San district and 109.3 µg/m³ at Phasi Charoen district.

The PM2.5 reading for Bangkok at AQICN.org at 10 a.m. was 171 µg/m³  which is unhealthy. 

For the standard value of PM 2.5 dust, the average over 24 hours should not exceed 37.5 µg/m³. If it exceeds this, it is considered to have an impact on health.

Toxic level is above 300 µg/m³.

The three Bangkok schools shut today are as follows:

– Wat Udomrangsi School:  Nong Khaem district office ordered three-day closure from today till Wednesday (Jan. 22);

–  Prachi Bamrung School:  Nong Khaem district office  ordered two-day closure, today and tomorrow;

– Wat Bang Pakok School: Rat Burana district office ordered two-day closure, today and tomorrow.
