Thais, foreigners flee Pattaya condo fire

NEARLY a hundred Thais and foreign tourists rushed out of a luxury condominium in Pattaya in panic after a fire broke out at 3 a.m. this morning (Nov. 1) with three foreigners and a rescue worker getting injured, Amarin TV said.

Upon being alerted of a fire breaking out at a seven-storey condominium in Bang Lamung district, Sawang Boriboon Radio Centre promptly coordinated with Pattaya City Land Disaster Prevention Department which sent 10 fire engines to fight the blaze.

When firemen got there they saw flames shooting out of unit number 612 on the sixth floor and quickly went up and rescued three foreigners who suffered from smoke inhalation and burns and took them to the hospital.

In doing so a rescue worker, Mr. Thaksin Thienkhao, got cut on his right arm by exploding glass.

Ms. Sirinda Sirikul, 62, who lives in unit number 610 said she heard her neighbours next door arguing after which there was a loud noise but did not think much of it because they were always quarrelling.

However today after the noise died down she smelled smoke and upon coming out saw a lot of smoke billowing out of this unit so her husband and her rushed out to save their lives.

Pol. Col. Nawin Thirawit, superintendent of Pattaya City police station, said no conclusion had been reached on the cause of the fire with investigation continuing.

It took firemen two hours to put out the blaze and during this time they rescued 63 people from the building including the three injured foreigners and the wounded rescue worker.
