SENATOR SOMCHAI Lenglak could possibly be suspended from doing his legislative duties in the wake of the Supreme Court’s verdict delivered against him today (Sep. 23).
The Supreme Court ruled the senator guilty of involvement in vote-buying activity in last year’s election for MP of Songkhla which he had unsuccessfully contested, thus prohibiting him from seeking political positions at any levels for a 10-year period.
However, Somchai who was voted a senior lawmaker in the category of independent occupational earners in last June’s senatorial election, categorically dismissed the vote-buying charges and planned to fight in the Constitutional Court to continue to perform as senator and keep his legislative status intact.
Last year, the Election Commission lodged the vote-buying charges against the senator who was then contesting for MP of a southern constituency under the tickets of the Bhumjaithai.
It remains to be seen whether the Supreme Court’s 10-year ban on Somchai’s contests for any political positions will take a retroactive effect or render an immediate suspension of his legislative duties at an order of the Constitutional Court.
