WITH the Constitutional Court set to pass a ruling on a lawsuit to dissolve Move Forward Party next Wednesday (Aug.7) the party this evening (Aug. 2) outlined its defence with the key point being its contention that this court does not have the authority to dissolve parties, TV Channel 7 said.
During a press conference that last over an hour, Move Forward leader/MP Chaithawat Tulathon and former Move Forward leader/MP Pita Limjaroenrat also underscored that their party had not looked to undermine the rule of the country by having earlier sought amendment to the draconian lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Code.
The Election Commission had lodged a petition to the Constitutional Court to consider dissolving the party on this charge.
The two of them are also confident their facts will hold up in court and they will receive justice according to international standards.
Move Forward also invited its supporters to join an event entitled “Own Party, Own Country” on the day this court passes the ruling with this to be beamed to 16 gathering points nationwide. Mr. Piyabut Sangkanokkul, secretary-general of the Progressive Movement, will be giving a talk on the topic “Constitutional Court and Dissolution of Political Parties”.
Meanwhile Mr. Sahakarn Petchnarin, director-general of the Corrections Department, said de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra’s royal pardon-curtailed one-year sentence over few counts of convicted misconduct perpetrated during his former premiership nearly a couple of decades ago ends at midnight Aug. 31 and not the date he started his sentence, Aug. 22.
Nevertheless, Thaksin had never spent a single day behind bars to otherwise serve this sentence at Bangkok Remand Prison but had been instead granted contentious double-standard privileges of staying for a six-month period at Police Hospital under the pretext of mystery-shrouded “illnesses” before being released on parole last February.
