DE FACTO PHEU THAI BOSS Thaksin Shinawatra said today (July 26) he would not be worried at all about an impeachment lawsuit filed in court against Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.
The former prime minister told reporters at his Chan Song Lah residence that he has found the case against the current prime minister no cause for serious concern because, he said, his successor had named a minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office in a “transparent and honest” fashion.
According to the de facto Pheu Thai boss, Srettha had not intentionally violated the constitution and code of political ethics pertaining to the questionable naming of Pichit Chuenban, Thaksin’s former lawyer, the portfolioless minister in a Pheu Thai-led cabinet lineup earlier this year.
But a group of 40 senators who had filed the impeachment case against the Pheu Thai-attached prime minister charged that Srettha could have avoided breaking the law and could have denied the ministerial seat for a former convict.
Though Pichit had resigned under pressure, the plaintiffs maintained that the allegedly illegal act on the part of the prime minister as an irreversible fait accompli for which he could possibly be impeached by court.
Nevertheless, the billionaire, powerful Thaksin said Srettha could efficiently defend himself in court against the charges of perpetrating a severe breach of the law by naming in vain his former lawyer the minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The Constitutional Court is scheduled to deliver a verdict on the Pheu Thai-attached prime minister’s impeachment case on Aug. 14. If finally found guilty as charged, Srettha, quietly pushed to power by Thaksin’s sister/former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, could possibly be deprived of his prime-ministerial status immediately.
