Mae Sot, Myawaddy heavily flooded after four days of torrential rain

 

THE Thai-Myanmar border along Mae Sot city on the Thai side and Myawaddy township on the other side of Moei river are heavily flooded after four days of torrential rain led to this river rising by 1.5 metres and overflowing with a large number people on both sides of the border affected, Thai Rath newspaper said today (July 26).

At 5 a.m. today officials at a rain gauge station in Tha Sai Luad sub-district, Mae Sot district, said over 100 millimetres of rain fell over the past 24 hours, which this being the fourth day of heavy downpours that led to Moei river overflowing.

The floodwaters, red in colour and flowing swiftly, are continuing to rise.

The market on the Thai bank of Moei river adjacent to the First Thai-Myanmar Friendship bridge was completely inundated with floodwaters being over a metre high. Vendors chaotically fled from stalls selling food and souvenirs as floodwaters strongly gushed in.

Mr. Sanya Petchet, Mae Sot district chief, quickly mobilised policemen and soldiers to rescue flood victims and help move their belongings and pets.

The Moei river is being watched as a crisis could occur on both banks of the Moei river which is still overflowing and flooding already widespread.

The latest report says that the volume of water at the start of Moei river in Phop Phra district is rising even higher and when it flows down it will increase flooding in Mae Sot and nearby districts as well as across the border.
