AROUND 500 Myanmar construction workers protesting at a factory construction site in Rayong where seven of their colleagues were killed and many others injured after a tower crane collapsed with rescuers blocked from going in to help the injured and take the bodies for autopsy reached an agreement with the employer for compensation of 1.6 million baht per death in the wee hours of this morning (Mar. 30), Matichon newspaper said.
The workers, who had demanded 5 million baht per death, said they did not trust their employer because he did not pay compensation when another worker had previously died in an electrical shock accident.
At 11 p.m. last night Rayong MPs Mrs. Sawangjit Laoharojanapan and Mr. Chutipong Phiphobphinyo, joined the negotiation held by Pol. Maj. Gen. Pongphan Wongmaneethet, head of Rayong provincial police department. Pol. Col. Chaiphong Saengphongchai, superintendent of Pluak Daeng police station, Mr. Sakon Korakot, Pluak Daeng district chief including relatives of the deceased and factory executives.
Chutipong later said the executives had rejected a reduced compensation demand of 2 million baht excluding social security payment with negotiation then continuing.
Mr. Sommat Anantharachai, an employment broker, and Social Security officials said the workers were insured and entitled to 800,000 baht each in case of death but this must be legally executed.
An hour later Chutipong said an agreement had been reached to pay 1.6 million baht per death including social security benefits with this sum excluding other compensation according to the law. In addition the company will be responsible for the funeral expenses.
Being paid right away is 500,000 baht to each of the seven bereaved families with the rest to be handed over within three months.
When the workers representatives announced the agreement, they all cheered and shouted with joy in accepting the compensation.
