THE National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) warned mobile phone users to urgently update their devices by Aug. 30 to prevent cybercrime, TV Channel 7 said last night (Aug. 12).
Cell phone users were urged to check and update their phone number information through channels specified by their service providers by Aug. 30. Should they receive an SMS or message alert from their network provider, they should follow the steps immediately. If unsure, users should contact their network provider’s service centre directly.
Thais continue to fall victim to online fraud with over 120,000 cybercrime cases reported in the first four months of this year. Total losses exceeded 7.48 billion baht, or an average of over 1,000 cases per day.
The most common form of cyberfraud involves purchase of goods and services, totalling over 85,000 cases. Investment scams and promises of high returns cause the highest damage, almost 6 billion baht. Therefore, the public must exercise increased caution, especially when conducting online transactions.
Recently, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) joined in solving this problem by using the Capital Market Development Fund to support young researchers in addressing the challenges in the AI era and cyberthreats.
Last year, 10 research projects were supported, and these were subsequently applied. This year, another 10 projects are being supported to ensure research is used to develop the country and solve problems for Thai people effectively.
