Man-made fires in Chonburi wildlife sanctuary yet to be put out

MAN-MADE FIRES which have occurred since the last several days in a wildlife sanctuary in Chonburi are yet to be extinguished by the authorities.

National Parks, Wildlife & Plant Conservation Department director-general Atthapol Charoenchansa said today (Jan. 15) a few suspected wildlife hunters had allegedly torched the woods in Khao Khiew/Khao Chompoo wildlife sanctuary in Sriracha district of the eastern province, prompting the department’s officials and rangers to put out the blaze and track the fleeing suspects who are yet to be brought to justice.

Fifty-two spots in the wildlife sanctuary had been purposely set ablaze by the suspected wildlife hunters, Atthapol said.

Some of the literally burning spots had already been extinguished whilst others are yet to be put out as soon as possible, according to the department chief.

However, one suspected accomplice has been earlier arrested in the eastern wildlife sanctuary, leaving the few others at large.

Unlike wildfires which might naturally occur in dry season, the ones at Khao Khiew/Khao Chompoo wildlife sanctuary were evidently man-made since the suspected hunters had set the woods on fire to air their frustrations at the arrest of their alleged accomplice by the authorities, he said.
