Policeman’s wife held over cyanide killing, link to 6 more deaths probed

NATIONAL Police Chief Pol. Gen. Damrongsak Kittipraphat said the wife of a deputy superintendent at a Ratchaburi police station has been arrested in the cyanide poisoning death of a young woman during Songkran festival, Matichon newspaper said today (Apr. 25).

Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Surachate Hakparn, nicknamed Big Joke, who is leading the investigation into this case, said aside from this woman’s death there are six other mysterious deaths that occurred over the past two years, with two of them being policemen, Naewna newspaper said.

The suspect, Ms. Sararat (surname withheld), or Am, was found in possession of a bottle of cyanide and this linked her to the death of Ms. Siriporn, 32, Pol. Gen. Damrongsak said.

She had suddenly died while making merit by releasing fish with close friends at Mae Klong river pier in Ban Pong district of Ratchaburi province with her mother and older sister then having filed a complaint.

Investigation shows that Sararat likely mixed the dangerous chemical into the food the deceased woman ate with the motive being to steal her possessions. She is currently being questioned at the Crime Suppression Division.

Pol. Gen. Surachate said these seven deaths occurred in Ratchaburi, Kanchanaburi and Nakhon Pathom provinces over the past two years.

An autopsy of the latest victim showed cyanide in her stomach and it is likely it was mixed with her food.

So far families of five victims have been contacted. They said they had assumed their relative had died naturally and that is why they did not file a police report.

However as the family of the seventh victim did do so this led to an investigation, yet Pol. Gen. Surachet pointed out a lot of time had passed and it did make investigation difficult.
