Phrae rocked by 9th small quake in three days

NORTHERN Phrae province was shaken by its ninth small earthquake in three days this afternoon (Oct. 21) with this measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale and at a depth of four kilometres, TV Channel 7 said.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said the latest quake occurred at 2:59 p.m. at Huai O subdistrict in Long district of this province.

However initially there were no reports of tremors being felt,

The department explained that these small quakes were occurring because of a shift of the Thoen Fault group that lies in the Northeast – Southwest direction with this shift being in a horizontal leftward direction.

During Oct.19-21 nine earthquakes of 1.5-3.7 magnitude have occurred.

Chiang Mai too was rocked by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake with a very shallow depth of two kilometres at 4.36 a.m. yesterday morning  and residents said they had never experienced this strong a quake that even shook houses before.
