Prayut ordered by court to stop performing as PM

PRIME MINISTER PRAYUT Chan-o-cha was today (August 24) ordered by court to stop performing his duties until a court ruling on his eight-year rule has been delivered.

Judges of the Constitutional Court voted 5:4 to issue the order for Prayut to stop performing as premier until the court ruling on the contentious eight-year rule has been delivered. Such a court ruling is largely expected in one month.

The Constitutional Court is yet to determine whether Prayut’s eight years in power maximumly provided by law may have just ended today, the date on which he rose to premiership in August of 2014 following a coup which he himself orchestrated as army chief to depose an elected government.

Under a royal command of the late King Rama IX the Great, Prayut was named head of a post-coup, military-installed government in 2014 and was consecutively named head of a Palang Pracharath-led coalition government following a general election in 2019.

In the meantime, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan has now become caretaker prime minister, pending the court ruling on the embattled premier.
