A GOVERNMENT candidate has won today’s by-election for MP in Lampang largely defeating his archrival from an opposition party.
According to unofficial results of the by-election in Constituency 4 of Lampang, the Palang Pracharath candidate, Wattana Sitthiwang, won more than 45,000 votes.
That compared to an estimated 26,000 votes cast for the Thai Liberal candidate Somboon Klaphachon.
Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Thammanat Prompao had visited constituents to woo votes for Wattana whereas Thai Liberal Party leader Seripisut Temiyavej had done the same for Somboon.
Both candidates had been largely defeated by the deceased Pheu Thai MP Itthirat Chantharasurin whom the winning candidate is replacing.
All four constituencies of Lampang had been earlier dominated by the Pheu Thai Party until today’s results of the race to parliament.
