PRIME MINISTER PRAYUT Chan-o-cha and 10 other cabinet members survived today’s (July 23) censure/no-confidence motion, with the premier-cum-defence minister being given 256 votes of confidence against 206 votes of no confidence.
Following four long days of censure debate, beginning last Tuesday, most MPs on both sides of the parliament aisle cast votes either for or against the premier and the other censured ministers whilst some abstained from voting.
Prayut and all the 10 others survived the censure/no-confidence motion which was the last for the current coalition government and widely speculated to be followed by a cabinet reshuffle sooner or later.
Prayut saw 256 MPs cast yea votes for him, compared to 206 MPs who cast nay votes against him whilst nine others abstained from voting.
Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanavisit was given the least votes of confidence among all the targeted cabinet members or 241 yea votes, compared to 207 nay votes and 23 abstentions.
Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongwusan, who concurrently performs as top leader of largest coalition partner Palang Pracharath Party, was given the most votes of confidence or 268 yea votes and the least votes of no confidence or 193 nay votes and 11 abstentions.
A cabinet member needs more than 239 out of a total of 477 MPs or more than half to give him or her yea votes to survive a censure/no-confidence motion as provided by parliamentary rule.
