AN 83-year-old man who shot dead his mute, drug-addicted son last week after 30 years of abuse was arrested by Pathum Thani police today (June 22) on the charges of premeditated murder and unauthorized possession of a firearm and ammunition, TV Channel 7 said this evening.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Chayut Manithara, head of Pathum Thani Province, said last Thursday June 17 Nong Suea police station were notified that a mute man had been shot dead at a two-storey house with an open basement in this district so rushed there to investigate.
At the house they found the body of Mr. Somboon Pliannuam, 44, lying naked in a pool of blood on the floor after having been shot five times with some blood having seeped down to the basement.
As surveillance cameras around the house did not show any signs of a suspect escaping, they brought the family in for questioning.
Later the 83-year-old man, whose name is also Mr. Somboon Pliannuam but his first name spelt differently in Thai, confessed to killing his son who was mute and addicted to drugs after having been regularly beaten by him for 30 years.
He added that he had bought a revolver from a teenager for 5,000 baht and on that day he had first fired three shots at his son on the staircase.
His son ran upstairs and was writhing on the floor when he pumped two more bullets into him, thus killing him.
He reiterated that he had endured incessant abuse throughout the three decades which led to him deciding to kill his son.
Police seized the revolver and found that the gunpowder stains on the body and the firearm matched.
Police later took the suspect for a crime reenactment at his house.
