TORRENTIAL rainfall that started at 10 a.m. today (July 30) and continued till noon led to Sukhumvit road passing through Rayong, particularly a section under construction, getting heavily flooded causing severe traffic congestion with small vehicles struggling to pass through, Naewna newspaper said.
Heavy rain pounded many parts of Rayong province causing a rapid accumulation of rainwater and impacting community infrastructure.
Significant flooding occurred at the section of Sukhumvit road passing Taphong subdistrict, Rayong city district. This area is currently undergoing road expansion and construction, temporarily blocking the existing drainage system and preventing the large volume of rainwater from flowing away quickly enough. Floodwaters then overflowed and inundated a wide stretch of the road surface, causing severe traffic congestion in both directions.
All types of vehicles, including motorcycles, had difficulty navigating and had to exercise extreme caution to prevent accidents.
Densely populated residential areas in an alley behind Taphong fruit market were overwhelmed by floodwaters which rose 30- to 40-centimetre high. This made it impossible for small vehicles to go through with residents rushing to move their valuables to higher ground to prevent damage.
