CUSTOMS officials in Nakhon Ratchasima province (Korat) raided three shops at a market in this northeastern province and seized over 3,000 knock-off brand name products worth over 15.5 million baht, Amarin TV said today (June 14).
Mr. Prasit Deejongcharoen, Chong Chom Customs chief, along with officials from Customs Region 2, got a warrant to search the three shops after being tipped off that they were selling large quantities of counterfeit products.
An inspection showed that all the goods these three shops were selling were fake luxury products, mainly shoes. Other items included handbags and suitcases plus clothes.
Those selling the seized counterfeit goods will be charged under Section 242 of the Customs Act for the offence of “smuggling,” covering the import and export of goods without customs clearance or the unauthorised movement of goods from controlled locations. The penalty is up to 10 years’ imprisonment, or a fine four times the value of the goods (including import duties), or both.
Penalty under Section 246 of this law for receiving smuggled goods, goods that evade duties, or goods that violate prohibitions/restrictions is up to 5 years’ imprisonment, or a fine of up to 500,000 baht, or both.
