Big hunt for biker who slashed former Finnish F1 racing driver’s leg

BANGKOK Metropolitan Police Chief Pol. Lt. Gen. Sayam Boonsom ordered all 88 police stations under his jurisdiction to urgently hunt for a motorcyclist who slashed the leg of a former Finnish Formula 1 racing driver with the attack believed to have occurred in Lumpini area, PPTVHD 36 said today (May 26).

Investigative units at all 88 police stations in the metropolis were told to quickly chase leads, check the crime scene, and trace the assailant’s escape route after Mr. Mika Salo, 60, was attacked and injured in the leg with a sharp object.

Information indicates that Salo entered Thailand on May 19, 2026, via Suvarnabhumi Airport and stayed at a hotel in Sukhumvit 2 area, Khlong Toei district.

Following his attack Pol. Maj. Gen. Pallop Aeromla, deputy chief of Bangkok Metropolitan Bureau, along with officers from the Investigation Division, personally inspected the scene. He ordered a detailed review of CCTV footage from the surrounding area to trace the assailant’s escape route.

Police are also coordinating with the Finnish embassy to get additional information and locate the victim to file a police report.

Most recently, the investigation team has determined that the attack occurred within the jurisdiction of Lumpini police station. This followed Thonglor police station confirming that they had not found any evidence indicating that the attack occurred within their jurisdiction.

According to Finnish media, Salo was crossing a pedestrian crossing last Tuesday (May 19) when a moped rider passed close by. He initially believed he had only been lightly hit, before discovering blood pouring from his leg, Scandasia.com said.

“I looked down and saw that my shoe was completely covered in blood,” Salo told Finnish newspaper IS.

The former Ferrari stand-in driver later sought treatment at a local hospital, where doctors reportedly found a deep wound on his calf. Salo said medical staff suspected the injury may have been caused by a knife due to the clean and straight nature of the cut.

Hospital staff also reportedly told Salo that several other people had arrived with similar injuries the same evening, allegedly linked to the same moped rider.

Salo competed in 109 Formula 1 races during the 1990s and early 2000s. He is best known for replacing injured Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher during the 1999 Formula 1 season.

The Finnish driver said his wound had so far avoided infection and he is recovering after the incident.
