Only the third time in the world an electric train wheel fell off

UPON suspending the operation of the whole batch of Yellow Line electric trains after a wheel fell down and landed on a taxi’s bonnet last evening (Jan. 2) Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote said this is only the third time in the world  something like this has happened, TV Channel 7 said.

It was in Brazil that an electric train’s wheel first fell off in 2019 with the second time occurring in China two years later in 2021, he said.

After the Yellow Line train’s guide wheel suddenly dropped down and landed on the taxi’s bonnet last evening, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit ordered relevant agencies to investigate and determine the cause of this accident.

Surapong said it is now clear that the wheel system of this batch of trains was defective from the factory.

The Yellow Line operator, Eastern Bangkok Monorail Co., has been ordered to suspend running the problematic electric trains and thoroughly check and repair them.

Despite this the Yellow Line is still operating normally but at a reduced frequency.

Surapong confirmed that every Yellow Line train will be inspected before going back in service.
