Audio clip on border opening is fake: PM

PRIME Minister Anutin Charnvirakul denied an audio clip circulating in Cambodia wherein he is alleged to have said he is reopening the border crossings between the two countries is what he had said with this being just AI voice cloning, Naewna newspaper said today (May 13).

“That’s clearly AI. I’m not good at speaking like that. Please don’t believe it,” he said of this audio clip circulated by a Khmer influencer while confirming he is not reopening the border.

He was speaking at Don Mueang Airport just before flying with his team to Surat Thani and Phuket this morning to follow up on resolving issues concerning foreign business operations on Koh Phangan and encroachment of Freedom Beach in Phuket.

Cambodia will be using of compulsory conciliation mechanism under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos) on Thailand having cancelled Memorandum of Understanding 2544 (MOU44) between the two neighbouring countries on border demarcation and working towards joint offshore energy exploration, meaning a dispute resolution before other processes are initiated, while Thailand will be following Unclos procedures with the specific mechanism not yet determined but is not facing any hardship, he mentioned.

Regarding some Thai citizens arrested by Khmer soldiers for foraging in the forest near the Thai-Cambodian border, who are expected to appear in a Cambodian court today, the Prime Minister said coordination had been made while noting that in the past Khmer citizens too had unintentionally entered Thai territory and if they did not steal nor done anything affecting Thailand’s security, they would be deported.

“We hope that our people haven’t broken any of their laws. We will negotiate where possible. As I said, the public is not involved; this is a matter between governments with differing opinions, and it doesn’t concern the people,” he said.

On building the border wall, Anutin said the government is not handling this project because the military has been allocated a budget to build it and the security agencies should be asked about the construction process and design.

Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts also issued a strong statement opposing Thailand’s Fine Arts Department registering a group of temples and archaeological sites along the border in the Thai list of national historical monuments, Amarin TV said.

The statement specifically mentioned the Prasert Ta Muen Thom temple complex, Ta Krabey temple, aka Ta Kwai temple,  K’nar temple and other archaeological sites along the border as registered by Thailand, claiming they were located within Cambodian sovereign territory.

The Cambodian Ministry of Culture stated that Thailand’s actions were unilateral, “illegitimate, void, and without legal effect,” stressing that the move cannot be used as evidence to support territorial claims or border demarcation.

According to the statement, sovereignty and border demarcation between Cambodia and Thailand must be resolved in line with international law, including the Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907 and related legal instruments, as well as through existing bilateral mechanisms.
