Navy receives Thai-built ship for marine survey and disaster relief operations

THE Thai navy today (March 30) received the new HTMS Suriya which was built by Thais and replaces an aging ship of the same name due to be decommissioned with the new vessel upgrading naval survey capabilities aside from supporting various other missions, Naewna newspaper said.

ADM Pairoj Fuengchan, commander-in-chief of the Thai navy, presided over a ceremony at Fort Suea Son Lep Pier to receive the hydrographic and oceanographic data survey vessel which was built by Asian Marine Services Plc.

The new ship, which has a displacement of 1,460 tons and a length of 60 metres, can withstand rough seas up to level 5 waves and operate continuously for at least 10 days, covering a distance of 2,400 nautical miles. It also has accommodation for 67 personnel.

The primary mission of HTMS Suriya is to inspect and repair maritime markers in Thai waters, support hydrographic and oceanographic surveys and data collection, support maritime disaster relief, provide logistical support to various navy units located along the coast or at sea, and support other missions as requested.

The delivery of HTMS Suriya marks another significant step for the Thai navy in strengthening its maritime operational capabilities, coupled with the sustainable development of Thailand’s shipbuilding industry to an international level.
