A SMALL CLASH occurred at the Thai-Cambodian border this morning (Feb. 24) with Khmer troops firing a mortar round into Thai territory and a Thai patrol unit then retaliating by firing an M79 grenade launcher in their direction, Naewna newspaper said.
Maj. Gen. Winai Suwaree, a spokesman of the Thai army, said that Second Army Region sent a report at approximately 8.50 a.m. that just a some soldiers were patrolling Phlan Hin Paet Kon area in Sisaket province, within the Suranaree Task Force’s area of responsibility, Cambodian troops fire a 40mm mortar round near them but fortunately there were no injuries.
The Thai army team retaliated by firing an M79 grenade launcher in their direction for self-defence and to ensure the safety of that area according to the rules of engagement.
The Cambodian side’s actions violated the ceasefire agreement outlined in the Joint Statement, which both sides have upheld since it was signed on Dec. 27, 2025, he said, adding initial assessments suggest the incident may have resulted from Cambodian troop rotation with new soldiers unfamiliar with regulations and command structures moving in and this leading to operational shortcomings in the area.
Thai units on the ground have increased vigilance in carrying out their missions and prioritise the safety of personnel and civilians, he said.
Later at 3.15 p.m. in Government House Caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said no security meeting is being held over the border situation but he had discussed it with Army Commander Gen. Phana Klaeoplotthuk who he met at a meeting of the committee organising a celebration to mark His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch’s 99th birthday on June 26, 2026.
