A THAI trawler carrying three tons of fresh squid was seized by the Cambodian navy on charges of encroaching on their territorial waters with maritime agencies of both countries coordinating to verify details, PPTVHD36 said today (Feb. 16).
The fishing boat, K. Chok Burapha, whose owner resides in Khlong Yai district of Trat province, had set sail with its cargo of fresh squid from Thailand before being captured off the coast of Cambodia’s Koh Kong province.
A search revealed approximately three tons of fresh squid, along with packaging and storage paraphernalia such as water tanks and ice boxes. The crew was questioned about documentation and the origin of the seafood after the Khmer navy determined it had illegally entered their waters.
Koh Kong Governor Ms. Chhy Va, chairperson of the Provincial Administrative Unity Command, personally oversaw the arrest of the Thai crew and ordered the destruction of the confiscated squid while the vessel and related equipment were handed over to the Cambodian Coast Guard for temporary mooring while further investigation was carried out.
Maritime security agencies of both countries are currently sharing information to verify the identity of the vessel owner and its shipping route. It is unclear whether the encroachment was intentional or due to a navigational error.
