THE Thai navy mounted a full-scale operation to rescue 16 crewmembers of a cargo ship at risk of sinking off the coast of Phuket today (Feb. 7), with all safely brought ashore, Amarin TV said.
RADM Parach Rattanachaiyapan, the navy’s spokesperson, said the Maritime Security Command Region 3 was alerted of Panamanian-flagged cargo ship Sealloyd Arc, with a displacement of 4,339 tons, at risk of sinking near Koh Kaew Noi, approximately 10 nautical miles from the shore.
The navy’s Region 3 Operation Centre promptly launched a rescue operation, ordering warships and aircraft to immediately go to the area, and also coordinated with relevant agencies to help search and rescue the crew, monitor possible oil spills and deploy buoys to contain possible environmental impact.
A war room too was set up with relevant agencies to closely manage the situation and resolve problems.
The Thai navy reaffirms its commitment to ensure the safety of lives and property of the public, seafarers, and those in distress at sea, providing timely assistance 24 hours a day, while simultaneously safeguarding national interests and marine resources sustainably.
