Gunfight erupts as troops move in to arrest Yala petrol pump fire suspects

SHOOTING broke out in far south Yala province when a team of soldiers and policemen moved in to arrest a group of insurgents suspected to have bombed and set fire to 11 petrol pumps earlier this month, Naewna newspaper said today (Jan 20).

Col. Yuthanam Phetmuang, a spokesperson of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4 Forward Headquarters, said in a Facebook post with an accompanying video clip that the team from Yala’s Joint Special Operations Unit, Yala Task Force and the Yala Provincial Police surrounded a house at Ban Po Yani, Sateng Nok subdistrict, Mueang district, soon after midnight.

A graduated approach was employed, from mild to severe measures, strictly adhering to human rights principles. Local leaders were invited to talk to the occupants of this house and encourage them to identify themselves.

Then at 3.50 a.m. those in the house opened fire with unknown types of rifles at the officers, but initially there were no injuries.

Negotiations are still underway to persuade the violent group of insurgents to surrender and face legal proceedings.

The public was urged to report observing anything suspicious or unusual to ISOC Region 4 Forward Headquarters via hotline 1341. Those helping hide offenders, supporting them and giving them food supplies face two years imprisonment or a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both.
