ARRESTED at Suvarnabhumi Airport last evening (Dec. 16) was a Chinese scam boss wanted under an Interpol Red Notice for defrauding over 500 Chinese victims out of over 200 million yuan (around 1 billion baht) just as he was trying to flee the country with a Mexican passport, Amarin TV said.
The arrest was carried out under the orders of Pol. Lt. Gen. Panumas Bunyalak, commander of the Immigration Bureau, and other senior officers to step up screening of travellers entering and leaving the country to counter transnational crime and all forms of security threat.
Mr. Huang, 44, a leader of a transnational scamming gang, was arrested at this airport at 5.30 p.m.yesterday while trying to leave the country with a fake Mexican passport under the name Mr. Gol Goo with police finding his genuine Chinese passport concealed in his possession.
Further investigation revealed that Huang has a valid Thailand Privilege Card, allowing him to reside in Thailand for several more years. However, he chose to use a fake passport, which would reduce his residency rights – a highly unusual practice.
A database check of Huang’s Chinese passport revealed the Interpol Red Notice with Pol. Col. Pongthorn, deputy commander of Immigration Police Division 2, confirming that he is a key suspect of a scamming network wanted by Chinese authorities.
Investigation revealed that Huang fled from China to Myanmar in 2020 via an unofficial border crossing in Yunnan province and between 2022 and 2024 he set up a scamming gang base in Myawaddy township, across from Phop Phra district, Tak province, Thailand.
The gang’s modus operandi involved creating a counterfeit currency investment platform, using social media to lure victims. They posed as wealthy, single businessmen, gaining their trust with high returns in the initial stages, before shutting down the system, absconding with the money, and cutting off contact. This resulted in over 500 Chinese victims losing massive sums of money.
Initially, the Immigration Bureau at the airport charged the suspect with “using or possessing a counterfeit passport” and handed him and the evidence gathered to the Immigration Division 3 for prosecution under Thai law. They will then liaise with Chinese authorities to pursue international legal action.
