Pheu Thai has prepared censure motion against PM

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

THE PHEU THAI, currently part of the opposition bloc, has already prepared a censure motion to be filed against Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his Bhumjaithai-led cabinet after a parliamentary session has resumed next month, confirmed Pheu Thai leader Julapun Amornvivat today (Nov.21).

The neo-conservative Pheu Thai has prepared themselves for censure debate against the prime minister who concurrently performs as interior minister and any other members of the Bhumjaithai-led cabinet which may occur for a few days after the parliamentary session currently in recess has reopened on Dec. 12, according to Julapun who declined to tell exactly on what date the planned censure motion may be filed.

The prime minister is legally prohibited from dissolving the House of Representatives to call a general election after a censure motion has been formally lodged at parliament.

The Pheu Thai leader was apparently responding to comments earlier made by the prime minister that he may opt to dissolve the House upon the reopening of the parliamentary session scheduled for Dec.12 only to preempt the planned filing of a censure motion.

Given the probability of a House dissolution, moves toward the much-heralded amendment to the coup junta-designed constitution would be completely aborted.

An extraordinary parliamentary session is largely expected to open during Dec. 8 and Dec. 11 to provide for the second reading of legislation on constitution amendment whilst the third or final reading of the bill is legally obliged to follow after a 15-day interval has passed. However, all charter amendment efforts would automatically come to a close and be left undone if the prime minister dissolved the House in the meantime.

Anutin has earlier commented that he could not afford to bear the likelihood of himself being immediately ousted with no-confidence votes to follow censure debate, given the fact that the Bhumjaithai-led government is merely a minority one and that he would undoubtedly prefer to dissolve the House instead.

It will be unlikely for the People’s, currently the largest opposition party, to save the prime minister who concurrently acts as leader of the Bhumjaithai, core of the current coalition government, by unexpectedly casting confidence votes in lieu of no-confidence votes in order to keep him running the country whilst the Pheu Thai will most certainly cast no-confidence votes to depose him from power.
