A MOTORCYCLE bomb exploded next to a police substation in Far South Pattani province last night (Oct. 30) slightly injuring one policeman but heavily damaging four police vehicles and the building, Amarin TV said this morning.
An additional police team and bomb disposal officers immediately went to investigate the blast which went off at around 8.30 p.m. at an intersection on Highway 412 Pattani-Narathiwat, in La-nga subdistrict, Mayo district, where this police substation is located. Shrapnel and debris was scattered throughout the area.
There were seven police officers on duty at the substation when the loud explosion occurred. They ducked and immediately called for a bomb disposal team to come and investigate with one of them suffering a minor tinnitus injury.
Investigation revealed that a bomb weighing approximately 15 kilogrammes was hidden in the motorcycle and left next to the building.
Security officials believe the bombing is an attempt by insurgents to stir up unrest in this area and they are gathering evidence including going through CCTV footage to identify and arrest them,
Security has been tightened in this district with checkpoints set up in high-risk areas to prevent a repeat of the incident and deter movement of violent groups in the southern border province.
