PRIME MINISTER-cum-Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said after Cambodia complained to the UN about eerie and ghostly sounds played by a social media influencer at Ban Nong Chan village to drive out encroaching Khmer villagers that he is demonstrating that this is Thai territory and how then could one criticise him although he himself is trying to take an international viewpoint on this issue, Amarin TV said this evening (Oct. 12).
After Mr. Guntouch Pongpaiboonwet, or Gun Jompalang, took a sound system to the border to play the creepy soundtracks Anutin said that he respected him because when he was in the opposition he saw that when Thai villagers were being evacuated from the frontline at three to four provinces at the height of the conflict, this popular influencer was able to mobilise more vehicles to help them than the authorities.
He added that now that he is at the helm of this coalition government, he wants to point out that the authorities are not competing with Gun Jompalang but the state must first provide assistance then good people like him could step in to give support.
Regarding calls for him to visit Ban Nong Chan, Anutin stated that he will definitely go there, and when asked when, he replied “see you soon.”
On whether the Joint Border Committee chairman would be changed, the Prime Minister said Mr. Prasarn Prasarnvinitchai is still holding this position and not to ask whether the authorities are changing horses mid-steam but rather whether capable workers are being recruited.
Meanwhile Senator Angkhana Neelapaijit said in a Facebook post that yesterday (Oct. 11) Mr. Keo Remy, chairman of the Cambodian Human Rights Committee, wrote to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights that between 10.44 p.m. and 12.04 a.m., loudspeakers emitted noises described as “haunting sounds reminiscent of wailing ghosts.” This was followed by persistent aircraft engine noises from 3.22 a.m. to 3.53 a.m. deliberately targeting nearby Cambodian villagers with the intention of disturbing and intimidating them.
“Such actions constitute a serious violation of the spirit of the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand signed on July 28, 2025, and the 13-point memorandum of understanding reached at the extraordinary session of the General Border Committee (GBC) between Cambodia and Thailand on August 7, 2025, ” Keo Remy is said to have written.
Ankhana urged the government to recognise that any act that incites fear or psychologically impacts civilians, even those in a conflict and especially vulnerable groups, may constitute psychological torture under the Convention Against Torture, to which Thailand is a party.
“I’d like to hear how the government will address this issue on the international stage,” she said.
