Hun Sen tells govt to stop importing Thai canned food, shrugs off oil cut threat

CAMBODIA’S former premier and current Senate President Hun Sen last night (June 20) urged his government to stop importing all types of canned food from Thailand if restricted border opening is not lifted while ignoring a Thai opposition party’s call to stop exporting oil, TV Channel 7 said this morning.

In a Facebook post Hun Sen said Cambodia will not stumble if oil stops flowing from Thailand, on the contrary Thai companies would be impacted and if the Thai authorities want this to happen to go ahead with the plan.

Cambodia is ready to deal with threats to cut off supplies, such as Internet, electricity and oil plus expelling workers.

He warned that if Cambodian workers left Thai factories, farms, companies and construction sites, many Thai businesses may have to close down due to shortage of workers.

“If you dare, try firing all Cambodian workers and see how much it will affect the Thai economy,” he said.

“The same goes for oil. You can try it, but don’t forget to consult the Thai company (PTT Plc) first because it may mean destroying their business. In addition, that company also has petrol pumps in Cambodia, so maybe they have to find oil from other countries to sell instead.”

Hun Sen advised the Cambodian government and business operators to source their products from other countries so that they are not threatened.

If the border problem is not resolved Cambodia should stop importing all types of canned goods from Thailand, including canned fish and canned meat, as well as alcoholic beverages and energy drinks, and turn to consuming domestically produced products or importing them from other countries instead, he added.
