AFTER A man who came into contact with cows and buffalos and recently ate beef died of anthrax infection at Mukdahan province yesterday (Apr. 30) while a second patient responded to treatment and has survived the authorities quickly imposed strict control and are monitoring the situation, Naewna newspaper and Amarin TV said this morning.
The unidentified man from Lao Mi subdistrict, Don Tan district, went to see a doctor at Don Tan Hospital on Apr. 27 after getting fever and skin rash. Initial assumption was that he had contracted anthrax and he was then transferred to Mukdahan Hospital for further treatment but succumbed to the disease yesterday.
Drama Addict web page by Sgt. Phichit posted a warning about the spread of this disease and also mentioned that another patient, who aside from raising cattle, had also recently eaten raw beef at a local festival, went to see Dr. Nonchaya Jaitrong at the community hospital after developing fever and a wound on his hand.
She quickly diagnosed that he had caught anthrax and he is now recovering after quick treatment.
She alerted the provincial health office and disease control team with the Governor then prohibiting the killing of animals in this area.
The action was taken just in time because there is a big festival taking place a few days later and cattle would have been slaughtered which could have perhaps led to dozens falling sick.
It could have turned into an outbreak similar to the one that occurred in Laos last year where over 50 people died but Mukdahan was able to take preventive measures before being similarly hit.
