The quake, which struck at 2.27 p.m. and was epicentred at Khlong Khamao subdistrict, Nuea Khlong district, with a depth of 2 kilometres, led to local residents in both this and the city district panicking.
At city district police flats, policemen resting there ran downstairs with some saying they felt dizzy and asked people to be careful.
Most people in the southern coastal province said they had never felt tremors like this before.
The Facebook page of Region 5 Public Relations Office said the tremors affected several buildings including the Krabi Town Hall but there were no reports of serious damage or injuries.
The Krabi Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office has urgently sent officials to survey the possible damage to buildings, houses and other infrastructure, and is closely monitoring the situation.
